What kind of church is the Otawara Christian Church?

The Otawara Christian Church is a member of the Conservative Baptist Alliance of Japan. We believe the tenets of the historic Apostles’ Creed, and hold firmly to the belief that it is only by accepting God’s unilateral love and grace that we can been reconciled to Him. We welcome Christians of all backgrounds who wish to worship with us. Baptized members of other denominations who have accepted Christ as their savior may take Communion with us.

The Apostles’ Creed【

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again; He ascended into heaven, He is seated at the right hand of the Father, and He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

What are the services like?

Our worship services reflect the generational, inter¬national and denominational diversity of our church members. Worship is conducted in Japanese, but the service outline is printed in English in our announcement bulletin, and a live English interpretation by radio transceiver or a written English translation or summary of the sermon message is provided when we know in advance it will be needed.

Our services begin with the singing of a hymn from the rich historical treasury of traditional Christian hymns. We recite the Apostles’ Creed, and the service leader opens the service with prayer. After the prayer, we take a few moments to greet each other in welcome, transitioning to the singing of three more hymns, usually modern praise hymns. Our pastor Mr. Ohashi then presents a message developed from a Bible passage in an ongoing book-by-book Bible survey, expounding with integrity the original intent and the applications to our lives today. The first Sunday of each month we celebrate Communion. The service closes with the collection of an offering, a singing of the doxology, and a benediction by the pastor.

The worship service itself normally runs from 11:00 a.m. to noon. After the service, the service leader will take a few minutes to read the announcements in the church bulletin and ask for any special announcements or prayer requests. On days we celebrate Communion the services can run until about 12:30 p.m. After services you are welcomed to stay for a cup of coffee, and get to know us a little better. If other responsibilities call, you can just as easily leave right after services. One Sunday every other month on average we schedule a lunch together, and this gives us the chance to talk with each other in a more casual setting.

Will you ask me for money?

No. We collect an offering every week as an opportunity to joyfully worship God and contribute to His work through this church. Don’t hesitate to simply pass the offering bag to the next person if you are not ready to make an offering.

What should I wear?

Please wear what you feel comfortable in. People who attend the Otawara Christian Church wear everything from shorts and t-shirts (in the summer) to business wear, from pantsuits to dresses. The pastor and the service leader may dress up, but that doesn’t mean you have to.

Where can I park?

There are only a few parking spots next to the church itself, which we try to save for members and visitors with special needs. If you have a special need, please let the pastor know so we can save a place for you. The majority of our attendees who arrive by car use public parking available at the Tochigi Kenpoku gymnasium or at the other prefectural and city sporting facilities concentrated in the same area when the gymnasium lot is full.

Will I have to sign anything or be singled out in any way?

We are thrilled to have visitors, and have a form that allows us to introduce you at the end of our service, but if you would prefer to opt-out, just let us know. We keep an attendance roster in line with our obligations as a registered religious organization, but you don’t have to sign that either if it makes you uncomfortable.

Do I need to bring anything special with me to church?

No. At worship services we sing the traditional hymns from a hymnal, our praise hymns are projected on a screen, and we read and study from the Bible. We have a several copies of the Japanese-language hymnal and Japanese-language Bibles that can be borrowed for the service. However, if you have a Bible in your native language at home, please bring it with you. We do have a couple of English-language Bibles that can be borrowed if you need, and are gradually increasing the number of English-language hymn materials.

What about my kids?

We have a kids’ room separated from the worship room by a large glass window. You are welcomed to join other parents and children and participate in the service from there. We can offer babysitting in that room, making it easier for you to join in the worship service. Many of our children participate in special activities which the church organizes on some Saturdays. See our pastor’s wife Pat for more details.
